Metadata Schemas vs Application Profiles

Metadata Schemas sets of metadata elements grouped to represent describe the representation data of a specific domain or a type of information resource. There are several metadata schemas for many different domainsmd_standards).

An Application profile, on the other hand, can be seen as a combination of scheme subsets. It is a set of metadata elements, policies and guidelines defined for a particular applicationapp_prof). Application profiles canapp_prof2):

  • Draw on one or more existing namespaces - using elements from different element sets, but the application profile cannot create new elements not defined in existing namespaces.
  • Introduce no new data elements -
  • Specify permitted schemas and values
  • Refine standard definitions - refine existing definitions, but only if the derived definition is more specific than the original.
